Has Qi Gong A Scientific Explanation?

Among one of the mysterious art form practised over thousand of years by the chinese is Qi Gong.

Qi Gong is well described in the Wikipedia:
Qigong, chi kung, or chi gung (simplified Chinese: 气功; traditional Chinese: 氣功; pinyin: qìgōng; Wade–Giles: chi4 gong1; literally "Life Energy Cultivation") is a practice of aligning breath, movement, and awareness for exercise, healing, and meditation. With roots in Chinese medicine, martial arts, and philosophy, qigong is traditionally viewed as a practice to cultivate and balance qi (chi) or what has been translated as "intrinsic life energy". It is generally accepted that Qigong exercises have three components: a posture (whether moving or stationary) 調身, breathing techniques 調息, and mental focus on guiding qi through the body 調心. The prerequisite is a calm relaxing state of mind. Qigong is now practiced throughout China and worldwide, and is considered by some to be exercise, and by others to be a type of alternative medicine or meditative practice. From a philosophical perspective qigong is believed to help develop human potential, allow access to higher realms of awareness, and awaken one's "true nature".

Martial arts training
The practice of qigong is an important component in both internal and external style Chinese martial artsFocus on qi is considered to be a source of power as well as the foundation of the internal style of martial arts (Neijia). T'ai chi ch'uan, Xing yi, and Baguazhang are representative of the types of Chinese martial arts that rely on the concept of qi as the foundation. Extraordinary feats of martial arts prowess, such as the ability to withstand heavy strikes (Iron Shirt, 鐵衫) and the ability to break hard objects (Iron Palm, ) are abilities attributed to qigong training.

Take a look at the National Geographic investigation into the nature of Qi Gong with science and technology measuring tools.

Sir Nicholas Winston Saves Lives

Here is to remember a deed that had far reaching consequences.

And a prayer that the spirit that saves lives will continue to live in lands today

that eliminate lives to ensure that the greedy continues to prosper.

Sir Nicholas George Winton, MBE, (born 19 May 1909) is a British humanitarian who organized the rescue of 669 mostly Jewish children from German-occupied Czechoslovakia on the eve of the Second World War in an operation later known as the Czech Kindertransport. Winton found homes for them and arranged for their safe passage to Britain. The UK press has dubbed him the "British Schindler". He humbly kept his efforts a secret, until his wife found scrapbooks about the children in their attic. Winton was Knighted by the Queen of England, who said of Winton: "It's wonderful that you were able to save so many children."

Ebb Tide And Its Effects

Music has a way of affecting me.

The year was 1966 in the Specialist Teachers' Training Institute (STTI), Cheras.

I was doodling.

It was around 10.00 pm.

EBB TIDE by Frank Chacksfield came drifting in from my collegemate's room, doors away.

My feelings were awakened.

I felt drawn.

I drew flying figures in mystical space.

Then followed a desire to put into words those strange lovely feelings.

A poem was born: Of Man And Birds. Which was published in the College Annual in 1966.

And a painting was later made from the drawings.

I am recording this to remember a significant phase of my life that I value.

And to acknowledge the friendships and learnings from colleagues and teachers that I treasure.

And here is this engaging piece that inspired 2 creative works:

Investigating Acupuncture: Why It Works

I live in Penang where this practice is an ordinary living day-to-day-happening for chinese families. Family members seek the services of acupuncturists for treatment of aches and pains in limbs and other parts of the body.
This investigative docu has particular interest for me. It explains at the end the scientific explanation why acupuncture works. It is not just faith in what has been traditionally found to be workable. It is a system of healing that has a collated body of scholarship for learning, teaching and practice.

Published on Apr 1, 2013

This is an amazing BBC documentary about acupuncture, an ancient Chinese therapy.

Acupuncture is a collection of procedures which involves the stimulation of points on the body using a variety of techniques, such as penetrating the skin with needles that are then manipulated manually or by electrical stimulation. It is one of the key components of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), and is among the oldest healing practices in the world.

As part of the documentary, you will see an young women having an open heart surgery without any anesthetics, just acupuncture, a 2000 years old healing method. You will also see how it helps to treat migraines and many other conditions.Millions people have started believing that acupuncture works better than conventional medicine .This documentary explains about astonishing healing power of acupuncture and its booming market in western world.

Uploaded on Jan 12, 2012

On 5th and 6th of January in Bangkok (Thailand) Kseniya Simonova presented a sand story about His Majesty The King of Thailand Rama IX. Devoted to his 84th anniversary, the sand story created by Simonova told about the great inventions of the King conserning the Environment, about His love of his people and of His country. Kseniya was performing in the Royal Pavillion of Bangkok in a specially built hall in the presence of Her Royal Highnesty Princess Sirindhorn and the Government of Thailand. The spirit of the sand fantasy of Simonova, the feeling which she expressed in her art work stunned the audience. "I was very happyto receive such reaction", - says Kseniya, - "This sand story had a very long period of preparations, I was very worried about how the people of Thailand will take it. The music for my sand story was written by His Majesty the King himself. This music is really beautiful and inspiring. His Majesty is trully a genious person!"
After watching Kseniya's performance, the Princess of Thailand gave her flowers from herself and from her Father, the King as a present. Kseniya gave her Royal Hihnesty two discs with a sand film about the King which was shot by her and the Ovation.Tv (the Royal Television of Thailand) beforehand.

A Burst Of Spectacular Sounds by Eric Whitacre

Yet again, the human imagination integrates diverse forms, media, technology and human ingenuity.

This following piece is a brilliant composition. Equally brilliantly performed by a gifted choir
in TED Talks.

To help you enjoy this piece of choral composition is the entire write-up from Wikipedia:

Cloudburst is one of Eric Whitacre's most famous compositions. Whitacre wrote the piece in 1992 (age 22) for eight-part choir, with piano and percussion accompaniment. The text was adapted from Octavio Paz's poem El Cántaro Roto (The Broken Water-Jug). The first section is a cappella, notable for its dissonant tone clusters. Whitacre notates long, sustained notes with text to be spoken at random by each individual singer. Following the opening section is a baritone solo, which is then followed by the development of a new a cappella theme. This section continues into a spoken, arrhythmic incantatory solo with background. In the section titled "The Cloudburst", handbells (which are directed to be hidden from the audience) play a written two bars, and then play at random as the choir crescendos into an aleatoric section, which is signaled by a loud clap of "thunder". During this time, the choir begins claps, snaps, and thigh smacks in order to imitate the sound of rain. A thunder sheet, bass drum, handbells, suspended cymbal, wind chimes, and piano contribute to the effect of a thunderstorm. The storm gradually builds then fades, and the ending of the piece mirrors the beginning section, with the choir arpeggiating as the piano voices block chords. "Cloudburst" was the title feature of an album by Stephen Layton's chamber choir Polyphony. The album included other works by Whitacre and was nominated for the 2007 Grammy Award in best Choral Performance. A concert band version, commissioned for the Indiana All-State Band, was released by Whitacre in 2001.

Erich Fromm Talks About Having And Being

Erich Fromm talks about an aura that surrounds a person.
This aura is sensed and felt.
In the presence of this person, it is not just him talking or doing,
there is something about his being that captivates.
It is this presence (that being-part) that forms the central content
of HAVING and BEING
in the following 4 excerpts from an interview.
